This fall, we are taking time to celebrate Summer Academy. – an extraordinary program that has been part of the lives of thousands of Indianapolis families for four decades. The 100’s Summer Academy has provided our youth with a place to learn, grow, and develop the confidence they need to thrive. It has become a cornerstone of our work and an invaluable experience for families across Indianapolis.
Summer Academy is one of The 100’s seven core programs, each of which has enabled me to serve alongside men who are deeply motivated to encourage and uplift our youth. Nearly every one of these men can recall a teacher, coach, minister, or neighbor who went the extra mile for them as a young person—someone who saw potential and nurtured it. These men’s memories are vivid because they were life-changing. They remind us that we are all shaped by those who invested in us, and in turn, we carry that forward by investing in others.
That spirit of service is embodied in the life of Mrs. Vernice L. Williams, whose legacy of selflessness and excellence leaves us both humbled and inspired. Mrs. Williams, who passed away in 2021, spent over 50 years dedicating her time, talent, and heart to the Indianapolis community. From her work in the civil rights movement to her leadership in the Indiana Black Expo and her support of The 100, she exemplified what it means to build community through service and to hold the door open for the next generation.
As we reflect on the Academy’s four-decade legacy and Mrs. Williams’s extraordinary example, we are reminded of the urgent need to keep moving this mission forward. Our children need us—now more than ever. And just as others once invested in us, it is our responsibility to invest in them, ensuring they have the tools, mentorship, and encouragement to lead our communities into the future.
Together, let us honor this milestone, carry Mrs. Williams’s torch, and recommit ourselves to shaping brighter futures for the next generation.

Nearly 40 Years of Talent Development and Community Impact
For almost four decades, the Summer Academy has been changing lives. What started as a small summer program has become one of Indianapolis’ most impactful youth experiences—six weeks filled with academic growth, career exposure, and life-changing mentorship.
Generations of students have walked through our doors, leaving with stronger skills, bigger dreams, and the confidence to lead. As we celebrate this milestone year, we’re reflecting on how far we’ve come—and the incredible futures still ahead.

From Shy Child to Confident Leader
When Treysen Reynolds first stepped into the Summer Academy in 2019, he was a quiet third grader who often hung back in new situations. Like many parents, his mother, Tedra Joy, was searching for more than just a summer activity—she wanted a place where her son could grow academically, build character, and be surrounded by role models who would push him to aim higher.
Six years later, Treysen is preparing to enter ninth grade as a completely different young man. Through the Academy’s blend of academic enrichment, cultural experiences, and mentorship, he has grown into a confident leader who now introduces himself to teachers and professionals with a firm handshake and self-assurance. Now, Treysen is ready to come full circle.

Honoring the Legacy of Vernice L. Williams
Few individuals have left as powerful a mark on Indianapolis as Ms. Vernice L. Williams. For more than 50 years, she poured her energy into building stronger communities—championing youth through the Indiana Black Expo, supporting the mission of the 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, and modeling what true leadership looks like. Her life was a testament to excellence, perseverance, and service.
As we celebrate 40 years of the Summer Academy, we also celebrate Ms. Williams, whose legacy continues to inspire the next generation to lead boldly and dream without limits.
